Instructions on how to download files from your weber (or other Unix) account to your Mac. (Assumes you have a mail message that you wish to get into Mac MS Word. If you have a different kind of text file, like a melvyl biblio session, skip to step #3). Note: This assumes that you are already logged into your weber account.
1. Get into mail. Find the message you wish to download. Read the message to make sure it's what you want and then, at the following question-mark prompt, type an "s" and a filename. *
2. Quit mail.
3. Grab your mouse and drag down the File menu to FTP Enable.
4. Hold the cloverleaf key down and hit the "f" key. This initiates an ftp (File Transfer Protocol) session
5. At the "ftp>" prompt, type: put filename
(where "filename" is the name of the file you wish to transfer)
6. When the "ftp>" prompt reappears, "quit" ftp, and finish your business on the Unix machine.
If you double-click the file icon for your transferred file on the Mac, you will get the message: "The application that created this document cannot be found." Instead, drag the icon for the file until it is over the Word icon. When the Word icon changes color (darkens), release the mouse button and the document will be opened with Word. If this doesn't work, open Word as though you were about to create a new document and then, with the File menu or the cloverleaf-o combination, open your transferred document.
You will most likely find the transferred file in the folder on the Mac where Telnet resides. (I say "most likely" because, with a Mac, you can never be sure where the Finder is likely to place something).
