the other relevant list of that era (and no doubt still today) is
the 'nntp-managers' list, which is some combination of the 'backbone'
list and the rest being (relative) newcomers suddenly posessing a
relatively vacant NSFnet backbone just waiting to have a news feed
go over it.
nntp was the death of the cabal, really - when anyone can get a newsfeed
from anyone else on the net, the idea of a "backbone" sounds a little
silly. only the statistical measures of backbone-ness (the 'top 1000'
list) has any real credence on the large scale.
