                                             ONE DAY SHAKUHACHI WORKSHOP

On Sat. June 26th, 1999 Michael “Chikuzen” Gould will give a one day
shakuhachi workshop in Seattle, WA

The session will start at 10 am and go till 6 pm. There will be a break
for lunch.

Michael will teach the participants three complete pieces. Several
Honkyoku (original Zen pieces), and a modern piece, or a folk song.

Most of the repertoire of playing techniques will be covered.

ALL LEVELS ARE WELCOME, from beginner to advanced. No matter what your
skill level, it’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in shakuhachi
for a whole day.

Michael Gould studied Shakuhachi in Japan under renowned masters
Taniguchi Yoshinobu from 1982 to present, and Yokoyama Katsuya from
1987-1994. He earned his Shihan degree, master of Shakuhachi, in 1987,
and was given the name Chikuzen, derived from the Japanese Characters
for bamboo and concentration (the main character of Zen Buddhism).

In 1994 he received the Dai-Shihan title, Grand Master of Shakuhachi,
one of only a handful of non-native Japanese to ever receive this
honor. He has performed throughout Japan and the United States on radio
and televison, and is a university faculty member teaching Shakuhachi
and directing Shakuhachi research courses.

Michael recently taught in Boulder and San Francisco. He is gaining a
reputation as an exceptionally fine teacher. One who can teach as well
as he plays, which is rare.
