Hello fellow shakuhachi enthusiasts,

Appended below (and on the web at the address below) is a list of
the titles, in English, of the honkyoku on the Goro Yamaguchi CDs
recently released. I like to know run times for pieces and CDs,
(and I have very limited Japanese) so, with the help of my friend
and teacher, Mary Lu, I compiled a list of the titles and times.

The titles were worked up by comparing them with a list of titles
we have for another book of Kinko-ryu honkyoky notation, one written
by Notomi Judosho. Mary Lu discovered that the order of the titles
in the Yamaguchi notation (CD III, Track #3 excepted) was identical
to that in the Notomi book - up to the point where the Judosho ends
(Naka no shinte, piece #29 in Judosho excepted). There are 30
pieces in the Judosho book, 37 in the Yamaguchi book.

A question: is this order something of significance? In other
words, are the first 30 pieces ordered that way for historical
reasons (like age or importance) or more pragmatic ones?

One minor problem is that there is no notation (that I can find)
for CD III, Track 3: Ikkan-ryu Koku Kaete. Yamaguchi-sensei seems
to be playing from the kaete (2nd hand) notation printed along side
CD III, Track 2: Koku Reibo, but he doesn't exactly follow it for
long and winds up somewhere else. If you can see where he goes
after he departs from the kaete notation on Koku Reibo, please
advise.

And, the title of Track 3 on CD XII is a mystery waiting to be solved.

As usual, if you have better, different, or more accurate translations
of these titles, please pass them along.

Enjoy,

bj

p.s. CD #6 is one piece - 61+ minutes long. Yow!
