Shakuhachi Summer camp

From: Sperrycs@aol.com
Date: Mon Feb 07 2000 - 08:05:57 PST

Dear Shakuhachi-ist,

It’s time to start making summer plans, and what could be more fun than a
long-weekend summer camp - playing shakuhachi with colleagues and friends,
with fantastic teachers, in an idyllic setting with beautiful natural
surroundings and excellent organic food?
This email is to inform you of the World Shakuhachi Society's "2nd Annual
Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies," an event we hope will interest you
and that you will be able to attend.

A Few Quotes From Last Year’s Camp

"A truly inspiring event, the intensity of the camp pushed my level of
ability to improve more in those few days then in the 2 years since I began
playing, and made a remarkable difference on how I continue to learn" Jason
Sanche, Calgary, Alberta

"Beyond the lessons themselves, it was really special to have an extended
period of time in a small group setting with these wonderful teachers to just
hang out and get to know them as individuals." Brad Klafehn, Denver, Colorado

"There is nothing like a week-long intestine with fine teachers to encourage
and inspire shakuhachi students, even rank beginners like me. The real payoff
comes after you get home and realize just how much you learned!" Shirley
Embra, Victoria, B.C.

"The enthusiasm generated at camp, with patient, caring teachers and
supportive fellow students, has inspired me to begin serious study of the
shakuhachi. A wealth of interesting, beautiful music was presented in a
manner that has allowed me to continue learning effectively at home." Cindy
Schlagel, Longmont, Colorado

BACKGROUND
The idea of an annual summer camp arose in response to the expressed
interest of World Shakuhachi Festival1998 participants to have a smaller
more intimate regularly-occurring gathering for shakuhachi enthusiasts.
Last summer we were able to offer the inaugural summer camp, giving
participants the opportunity to study intensively with two wonderful
masters of the shakuhachi: Dr. Riley Lee from Sidney, Australia, and
Yoshio Kurahashi, from Kyoto, Japan. The camp was a resounding success and
great fun! We are very excited to again be hosting Riley Lee and Yoshio
Kurahashi this year, as well as having master teachers Michael Gould, David
Wheeler and Yoko Hiraoka (koto/shamisen) on faculty.

DATES: Friday, June 16 to Tuesday,19, 2000.

LOCATION: The camp will again be held at Sunrise Ranch, a 400 acre
spiritual retreat and conference facility located near Loveland in the
foothills of the Rocky Mountains, about 1.5 hours north of Denver, Colorado
and Denver International Airport.

CAMP INSTRUCTORS: Yoshio Kurahashi, Riley Lee, Michael Gould, David Wheeler
and Yoko Hiraoka (koto/shamisen).

CURRICULUM: Instruction and classes will be tailored to accommodate all
levels of playing ability, and to address the full range of music the
shakuhachi is used in: from classical solo honkyoku and ensemble music, to
modern and contemporary, folk and improvisational genres. There will also be
instruments and materials for sale.

We are presently working on scheduling and activity coordination, and are
incorporating feedback received from participants to the 1st Camp in this
process.

THIS CAMP WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH A 100% SHAKUHACHI LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. YOU
WILL TAKE HOME MUCH IN LEARNED MUSIC, ADDITIONAL TECHNIQUE AND INCREASED
PERSPECTIVE, AS WELL AS ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECORD, AND SHEET MUSIC
FOR EVERYTHING THAT IS TAUGHT AT CAMP. AND NEEDLESS TO SAY, YOU WILL ALSO
TAKE HOME A GREATLY INCREASED AND STRENGTHENED NETWORK OF SHAKUHACHI FRIENDS
AND TEACHERS. SHAKUHACHI AND RECORDED MUSIC WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT
CAMP THIS YEAR!!

with Chikuho Sakai and Katsuya Yokoyama. In 1980, he became the first
non-Japanese to attain the rank of Dai Shihan (grand master), and has
lectured at the University of Hawaii, toured extensively in Japan, Canada,
Europe, Australia and the USA. He has produced at least 20 best-selling
recordings of shakuhachi music and has a Ph.D. degree in ethnomusicology
from the University of Sydney (topic: shakuhachi honkyoku transmission).
Author of numerous articles about the instrument, he lives with his family
west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains. Riley was most recently seen
internationally televised ushering in the new millennium on New Year’s
morning at dawn from the top of the majestic Sydney Opera House-quite an
auspicious start for the next 1.000 years for shakuhachi enthusiasts
worldwide.

Yoshio Kurahashi
Yoshio Kurahashi has been playing shakuhachi for 35 years, beginning
study as child with his father, the first director of the Muju-An school in
Kyoto, and later studying with Homei Matsumura, the renowned Kinko-style
player in Nara, Japan. In 1980 he became the second director of the Muju-An
school and has toured extensively since 1981 in the US, Thailand, Malaysia,
Singapore, China and Israel. Kurahashi-sensei is director of the Kyoto Hogaku
group and the Kyoto Sankyoku Association. Beginning in 1995 has been teaching
intensive annual classes in Boston, New York, Boulder and San Francisco. His
inaugural CD , Kyoto Spirit was released last year and received the great
honor of being voted BEST World Music release of the year by NEW AGE
MAGAZINE.

Taniguchi Yoshinobu. Specializing in Koden Honkyoku of the Watazumi Do style.

Chikuzen. From 1989-19994 he was a member of the International Shakuhachi
Center in Okayama, Japan where he studied under Yokoyama Katsuya. He was
given the title of Dai Shihan in 1992. Michael now resides in the USA where
he continues as an active and much respected teacher and performer.

master Junsuke Kawase III in 1977. He received his M.A. in musicology from
the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music in 1985. Since 1982 he has been
performing, teaching, lecturing and writing about shakuhachi and Japanese
music both in Japan and the US. David specializes in the classical tradition
but performance activities cover the full range of music today from Japanese
to Western and classical to the avant garde. David was one of the main
organizers of World Shakuhachi Festival 1998 and presently resides and
teaches in Colorado while maintaining an active touring schedule playing
locally as well as abroad.

Institute of Boulder. She has instructed koto and shamisen performance both
in the US and Japan for 20 years. She has a wide ranging repertoire in terms
of performance styles including traditional, modern, improvisational and
contemporary genres not often associated with the koto. Since moving to
Boulder in 1993 she has been instrumental in developing local programs
supporting music played on traditional Japanese instruments while actively
teaching and performing regionally and internationally.
