Some years ago two more shakuhachi players located themselves and their
families close by in this area. Both of them are students of this fellow
Okuda so they play only "hochiku" type flues which they themselves have
made. For those of you who may not know, hochiku are shakuhachi which have
little or no filler in the bore and are usually much longer and fatter than
the more common type of shakuhachi. These, of course, are the type of
shakuhachi used by Watazumi.

One of these guys, Kodama Hiroyuki, is a very accomplished player. He was
over here yesterday picking up some tips and tools in order to be able to do
the inlaid rattan bindings on cracked and split bamboo flutes. While we
were talking about shakuhachi activities abroad (outside of Japan) I
suggested that he might think about going abroad to offer workshops with
hochiku.

Should anyone be interested in something of this sort, making and playing
your own hochiku, please respond as convenience permits.
