A very good way to memorise a piece is to learn to sing it using the =
katakana names for notes. =20
One can practice productively even when not playing.=20
Subtle nuances may be more easily understood.
With modern music, singing allows a natural method of interpretation of =
complex phrases.

Many good teachers can sing the honkyoku at least as well as they play =
them.

It has often been a surprise to realise that a piece could be played =
from memory, but attempts to sing the piece were futile. The conclusion =
reached was that in learing to sing as well as play a piece, one could =
enter more deeply into the spirit of the music and truly know it "by =
heart".
