Norton Antivirus 2002 really does a really good job with email viruses....
besides downloading virus definitions automatically (each session) in the
background, it scans OUTGOING as well as incoming viruses (prevents SENDING
viruses for the benefit of others)... of course it snagged this particular
incoming virus attachment and quarantined it quite nicely ;*)

As far as the susceptibility of Outlook/Outlook Express to viruses, part of
the problem is the tight integration with the operating system as well as
the fluidity and availability of the code for developers as well as its
ubiquity. I actually like (and use) both programs, but a good antiviral like
Norton is a necessity... I also have found in my tech support job that about
60% of the people who have installed anti-virus programs don't bother to
update their programs or virus definitions, rendering the whole system
useless... part of the reason I really appreciate the latest Norton.

Good luck folks....

Whilst using a mailing programme/browser other than Microsoft may prevent
you from bulk-sending the type of virus we recently received, I believe, and
please correct me if I am wrong, it will not prevent you receiving one.

A Microsoft-free world may eliminate this form or terrorism just as an
American-free world may do likewise for other forms.
Either is both unlikely and undesirable.

Another solution is to purchase anti-virus software and keep it up to
date.

  Best wishes
  Andrew
