Some rap is in my mind very authentic, but some is just pandering to
what people think they want to hear. I had a
don't-know-whether-to-laugh-or-cry experience at an electronics store
in Japan a few months ago: I was in the stereo section, and on one of
the boom boxes some rap was playing. The lyrics were very x-rated (and
pretty damn misogynistic to boot), and it was playing really loudly.
Japanese families, with kids and older folks were all milling around,
blissfully unaware of lyrics that would no doubt have shocked some of
them right out of their socks if they could have understood them, while
I stood there, taking in the surreality of it all. Another day in
Tokyo...
