Hi Phil,

Please take a look at http://communication.ucsd.edu/shaku/ for details =
on how to unsubscribe. I am not the moderator of this forum (and I =
suggest the moderator periodically remind users how to handle the =
technical aspects of how to subscribe/unsubscribe to the list, etc., as =
many lists do), and in fact none of us subscribers are, with the =
exception of the single moderator; please keep in mind that your =
requests to unsubscribe are being sent to every one of us who has =
subscribed to the list, in effect adding to the "100 e-mails on this =
that and the other thing" phenomenon you alluded to earlier. However =
different and divergent the subscribers' interest in the shakuhachi may =
be, I think reading requests to unsubscribe from the list on the list is =
not what anyone has in mind.

Since you did not subscribe through Shakuhachi@communication.ucsd.edu =
(but shakuhachi-request@communication.ucsd.edu or possibly =
owner-shakuhachi@communication.ucsd.edu) it follows that you can not =
normally unsubscribe through Shakuhachi@communication.ucsd.edu . I know =
many of us in the list are not necessarily technically inclined and =
wading in the net in general can be confusing, but a moment's reflection =
on the consequences of mass-mailing personal requests unrelated to the =
aims of the list can help us avoid any basic netiquette faux pas.

I realize I'm basically adding to the white noise by writing about =
netiquette on a shakuhachi list, but if it can result in at least two =
people deciding to unsubscribe through the proper channels, rather than =
shouting to the entire list and hoping the one person moderating the =
list notices it, then I guess it isn't so bad.

Thanks,
Reg

  Hello,

I regret that I must unsubscribe to this list. Although most of the =
content is interesting, after a tour I just don't have time to wade =
through over 100 e-mails on this that and the other thing.=20

To me it should be practice, play, practice, play and more practice. I =
mean no disrespect here to any of you Tom's last e-mail was great.

This is the second time I've tried to unsubscribe. Please take me off =
the list.

  I wish you all well,=20

Tom's post on Hochiku was very informative. I was already trying to =
wade through the traditional shaku/sun vs. Western scale differences and =
this added a few more questions.

I know you said the Hochiku were not made to a set pitch like C or =
C# but did they still conform to the standard shaku / sun sizes usually =
recognized for the later Shakuhachi? Seeing as how they were really solo =
instruments with no set pitch I was wondering if they were simply cut to =
length starting at a convienent node and ending with the root end =
regardless of whether it worked ot to 2.2, 2.3 or just somewhere in =
between?

The flutes I build are just that. Starting and stopping with a node =
and root and sometimes falling between the recognized standards. For my =
solo playing all is well but obviously mine are not for serious study or =
playing with a friend.

    Thanks,
    Tony Miller
