Michael,
Good questions. The nice Shakuhachi I have bought both reside in plastic bags
to stay stable. Those I have made so far stay indoors and have not cracked. I
have less of an investment in those of my own making so I guess I don't worry
so much.

As for learning guides I am in the same boat as you.......searching. Monty
Levenson's site has a good selection of books and Tom Deaver has a nice
book/tape combo available too. Both have books covering the learning of
notation and fingering and elaborate from there. I am sure there are other
excellent guides out there as well but just started my search.
