How's that for irony--I'm now more embarrassed for y'all seeing that I'd =
consider it embarrassing to accidentally post my address change request!

Well, since I'm on... I just flew back into Tokyo a few days ago after an=
extended stay in the US, and the sakura are on their way out. As usual, =
the weather has been rainy and windy, contributing to their effervescence=
. I was going to try busking in one of the big parks here during hanami (=
sakura-viewing) parties this year--never tried that before--but I don't k=
now if they'll still be going on even though the weather's turned sunny a=
gain. If so II'll report back. Al Ramos has had some interesting experien=
ces doing so. My experience playing in public has been to be met with--mo=
stly--a lack of interest or to be asked to leave by security guards if I =
was on their turf. Perhaps I lack the magic touch, or sound as it were. A=
s part personal anthropological experiement and part attempt to proselyti=
ze I usually remind them that I'm playing traditional music on a traditio=
nal instrument blah blah blah but that has yet to change anything. One ti=
me the guards for the Takashimaya department store came after me a few ti=
mes because even though I kept moving I was still on Takashimaya property=
--it turns out they own pretty much the whole area south of the JR statio=
n in Shinjuku. After determining with their help where the boundary was I=
made a point of stepping a foot outside of it and continuing to practice=
for a couple of minutes (I was at that point standing in the street betw=
een two parked cars). With the cars, music blaring from stores, crowds, n=
earby jazz trumpet duo busking (very nice by the way), and other sounds a=
ll around me I could barely hear myself, much less make much of a sonic d=
isturbance, but of course it was the intentional contrevening of The Rule=
s that had them riled. Oh well, if no one tested the limits how would the=
obedient masses know for sure what not to do?=20
