On behalf of the 2002 Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies, I am pleased to
announce that two additional teachers will be joining us this year, Teruo
Furuya and Kasushi Matama. Both are masters in Katsuya Yokoyama's school,
and they are stellar players as well as personable and imaginative teachers.
I've included brief biographies at the end of this message. The entire
faculty for this year is:

Dr. Riley Lee from Sydney, Australia
Yoshio Kurahashi from Kyoto, Japan
Kaoru Kakizakai from Tokyo, Japan
Michael Gould from Ann Arbor, Michigan
David Wheeler from Boulder, Colorado
Teruo Furuya from Tokyo, Japan
Kazushi Matama from Tokyo, Japan
and Yoko Hiraoka (koto/shamisen), from Boulder, Colorado.

The camp is June 19-23 and is open to all levels. There are still some
openings, but it's important to register soon. You can get complete
information at http://www.shakucamp.com. We hope to see many of you there!

Biographies of Teruo Furuya and Kasushi Matama:

Born in Osaka, Teruo Furuya has become one of the leading disciples of
Katsuya Yokoyama and a highly respected player in his own right. He

Music Festival in Bisei (1994) and is currently the Director of the Ramposha
Chikushin-kai as well as President of the Tokyo Chikushin-kai. He has held

Kazushi Matama has been playing shakuchani since 1964 and completed the
traditional Japanese music course of NHK in 1973. Sinve then he has
performed extensively throughout Japan, Europe, and the Americas, often as a
guest player with the Ono Gagaku Association. In 1987 he participated in the
reconstruction of ancient musical instruments at the request of the Japanese
National Theater and the Imperial Household, and he has been active in the
planning and management of both the International Shakuhachi Festival in
Bisei and the Australian Shakuhachi Festivals in both Sydney and Brisbane.
He is President of the Yokohama Chikushin-kai and a Director of the Ranposha
Chikushin-kai.
