To Quote Ralf:
A question that strikes me, then, is to compare music to language as
expressions of, correspondingly, emotional state vs intellectual or
symbolic state.

Response:
There has been a great deal of work on understanding the difference between
the general "affect" of an emotion (the sensation in the body) and how one
mentally represents the experience using language or visual symbology. The
general opinion is that "emotions-as-sensations" are generalized (i.e.
crying produces the same somatic sensation even when associated with
different mental states such as joy or sorrow) even when the linguistic
explanations of those experiences are quite specific.
