For the record, jinashi does not mean that there is no urushi used. Even
hochiku as made by Nishimura Koku may be made with urushi.

During apprenticeship a number of beginners reacted to the urushi and ended
up in the hospital with their bodies so swollen that they could not put
their clothes on, eyes swollen shut, too. After about four months of using
urushi every day and more trips to the hospital they were fine and had no
reaction. Don't mean to say get the reaction again and again but it does
seem to be the case that after repeated exposure on a daily basis there is
finally no reaction at all. The same is true not only of shakuhachi makers
but others who use urushi daily.
