I'm in the middle of creating a performance in Tokyo
with the legendary father and son butoh team - Kazuo
and Yoshito Ohno. The cast also includes my shakuhachi
teacher, Kinya Sogawa and his wife Laurie Sogawa,
along with 12 butoh dancers, one modern dancer, a
German actress, an East Indian drummer, a Japanese
rock drummer, and a mother and baby. I originally
intended to make a performance exploring the pop
culture of Japan, but the war started. Now, the entire
cast is confronted with the question, "What does it
mean to make art in a time of war?"
I wanted to use the shakuhachi with butoh because
the two are presently intertwined in my life in Tokyo.
They are both something I love to do, although not for
spiritual reasons. I simply love practicing both art
forms. So, a month into rehearsals and the war starts.
What once started out as a performace piece that would
juxtapose glitzy Tokyo pop culture with deeper aspects
of Japanese art is now a meditation on peace in the
face of turmoil. The question was asked of the cast,
"Do we make art now, or just sit in front of the
internet with the BBC live on?"

If you are in Tokyo and are intersted in seeing the
results, please contact me or phone 070 5570-6942 for
the show at Kazuo's studio in Yokokama on April 5th.
Or, 03 3470-3211 for the International House show in
Roppongi on April 10th. The show is called Umi Yo Umi
Yo! ( The Ocean the Ocean!)

In this piece, there are certainly more aspects to
the shakuhachi than spirituality.

Sayonara,
 from Tokyo,
Perry
