Hi Dominic,

      A fellow shakuhachi player friend in Kochi, now training to be a Zen
monk at a temple up in Shiga ken,, has a black lacquered shakuhachi with a
red lacquered joint piece. The maker apparently made it as an experiment;
it is a 1.8 and has a nice sound. The maker's name in this particular case
is Genpu Mori, a professional shakuhachi maker in Kyoto. Another Kinko ryu
player in Kochi from a different branch also has a black lacquered
shakuhachi which he uses as his main flute, so I think one sees those kind
of flutes occasionally.
