That is really an amazing coincidence, I believe the popular word is
synchronicity.... I happened to grow up in Parkview Village (later
incorporated into Fairview Park) Ohio... a southwest suburb of Cleveland...
out near the Cleveland Hopkins Airport and the NASA facility there. The
entire area is part of a chain of parks that surround Greater Cleveland
called, fittingly enough, "the Emerald Necklace"... I grew up right on those
woodlands and frequently saw deer there (especially at the salt licks my
neighbors set up)... often napping in their imprints in the grass where they
had slept the night before...

I can say it was growing up in those wooded areas that influenced me to
respond to Zen and later take up shakuhachi... and so it goes full circle...

the deer family in my old haunts
the "distant call of deer" indeed!

Last month I was in Ohio, a little west of Cleveland. The suburbs out
there have lots of original wooded areas, and I was playing long
tones while walking along a running trail near my hotel. I spied a
small deer (a mule deer I think) nearby, and he spied me. We just
looked at each other for a while.

I thought I'd treat him to a few phrases of "Tsuru No Sugomori" (A
Distant Cry of Deer). He fled immediately.
