[Shaku] in a pinch...

Hello All,
I just wanted to add something to the great suggestions posted about
greasing up the nakatsugi of your shak.
I began my musical journey on the great Scottish Pipes. It was a common
practice to lubricate otherwise stubborn joints with good old body grease.
For most people, this is available in varying degrees from the sides of the
nose and temples. It's practically there when you need it and best of all,
it's free.
Here in Japan, it's not uncommon to see shakuhachi players rubbing their
instruments across their faces in order to impregnate their insturment with
that part of themselves, no doubt to give that wonderful brown glow to their
insturments.
I have been using this method on the nakatsugi of my shakuhachi for nearly
20 years with great results and no visible ware on the urushi.
Please don't get me wrong. I'm not downplaying pomade. I'm just suggesting
that in a pinch, and if you prefer, you have something close at hand.
all the best to all,
jeff
as a purely self promoting act, I would also like to invite anyone curious
to visit my newly uploaded web site which is admittedly, constantly under
revision. You can reach there at www.windwheel.com
As a note, due to the fact that there are a good many excellent sites
dealing with the shakuhachi, I am hard pressed to input my part (though it
is defintitely my intention to do so). It is yet forthcoming. j
