Jason, your perspective is perfectly okay for the context that you suggest,
however Mark was suggesting a playing situation that was really quite
different than anything monks of old encountered. True enough, playing
shakuhachi by oneself puts pitch and temper into a very subjective mode, as
it should be, and thus ones own particular points of reference apply as they
relate to ones particular awakening. But playing with even tempered
instruments or any other instruments including other shakuhachis obviously
takes the shakuhachi out of its original context and subjects it and its
player to very different parameters. It certainly is in the latter sense
that pitch and temper as they relate to a given and commonly accepted system
count very much. In which ever route a person takes in their exploration of
themselves and the universe at large certain points of reference exist and
those points must be taken into consideration to maintain a sense of
consensus, regardless of whether those points exist between one set of ears
or many. As such, all are valid, wouldn't you think?
