I have heard of 9-hole shakuhachi, but have never seen one. Does anyone =
know about its tuning? I recently acquired a 7-hole shakuhachi and =
enjoyed being able to play diatonically easily (without shading), but =
noticed accidentals still generally needed to be shaded, and =
possibilities for cross-fingering was rather limited. I'm guessing a =
9-hole shakuhachi was created as a response, but apparently it's either =
not very popular, or it's not easy to make a satisfactory one?

I thought at first that maybe it came about from someone substituting a =
shakuhachi-style mouthpiece on a recorder, but a quick check showed a =
recorder has 8 holes. I'd like to hear any reports about experimenting =
in this manner. I thought perhaps that the excellent "Navaching" site on =
shakuhachi (http://www.navaching.com/shaku/shakuindex.html) had =
mentioned something about this before, but I didn't find it.=20

Any info on either topic (including availability) is much appreciated. =
Thanks!
