Reply to BrianHoly zen cow! When I saw all those shakuhachi list =
messages in my mailbox, I though, "My G@D, did I hit the wrong send key! =
Thankfully not. The ensuing discussions have been real fascinating, =
though.

First, to Robert, no problem sending out your reply. It's great the way =
the internet can build a world wide community of ecentrics!
:-) Pre web, I would have never even found my first (PVC) shakuhachi, =
let alone all these great people who love and are dedicated to one of =
the most compelling instruments in the world. I've said before that =
(IMO) the shakuhachi is the most demanding teacher, but at the same =
time, the best of friends.

In that vein, I can understand, out of reverence and respect for the =
long tradition of shakuhachi in Japan, some may feel resentment at any =
reference to "shak". It's kind of like implying that Bach can be =
translated to Hip Hop without loosing it's esential nature. Besides, =
isn't there already a basketball player with that name! Seriously, the =
traditional nature of shakuhachi and honkyoku are intimitally =
interwoven, and none of us would probably be playing this instrument if =
that tradition didn't exist. Many sides - no right answer...

Sounds like I have made a big mistake by not attending the NY Shakuhichi =
Festival. Hopefully next year will present a new opportunity.

OK, here is a wild observation. I've been having a difficult time =
recently blowing shakuhachi (not the impitus of my search for a better =
instrument, though). In the past, trimming my beard seemed to make an =
improvement. So, I shaved the hair under my lower lip to mid chin and =
BAM - now I can easily get decent tones without having to blow my lungs =
out! Anyone else ever make this observation (ladies excepted)?

Finally, Thanks to all those who responded on and off the List to my =
orgional questions. There were so many helpful messages that I just =
don't have the time to respond individually to all of them - but all =
were greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
  brian =20

  Hi Group,=20
I originally sent this only to Brian, but since I hear so often that =
shak players can't afford our instrument. I thought I would post it to =
the list. I hope you are not offended Brian.=20

  Hey Brian,=20

Sometimes it's how you frame it. I have two fine shaks. Ronnie got =
them both
