This program provides an opportunity to hear the lively shamisen playing
(sometimes referred to as =93Japanese bluegrass=92) from the Tsugaru regi=
on of
northern Japan, along with banjo music from Appalachia. The Yoshida
Brothers, veritable rock stars in their native Japan, play the shamisen, =
a
banjo-like lute; performing with the fervor of Jimi Hendrix, they
incorporate jazz-like improvisation, pop-rock sensibilities and global mu=
sic
idioms into their innovative renditions of this ancient music. Noted banj=
o
player Akira Satake will open the program with Appalachian music.

Ryoichiro and Kenichi Yoshida, in their mid-20s, began playing Tsugaru
shamisen at the age of five in Hokkaido, their home in northern Japan, wh=
ere
they studied with master Takashi Sasaki. Their instrument, dating back t=
o
the 16th century, is a three-stringed lute with a skin-faced body and
fretted neck made of mulberry wood with a resonance similar to that of a
banjo. The shamisen used in Tsugaru folk music is larger and heavier tha=
n
the classical shamisen which helps give the music its heavy, thumping sou=
nd
quality. Historically, the art of Tsugaru shamisen=97a folk idiom first p=
layed
by itinerant blind musicians=97has no written code, ideal for the Yoshida
Brothers=92 pioneering improvisational style. The brothers break with
tradition in their body language as well as their musical
vocabulary=97shamisen in the past was played with a formal and expression=
less
demeanor, but the Yoshida Brothers physically sway and react to the sound=
s.
They have several best-selling albums in Japan, including Ibuki, which so=
ld
over 100,000 copies, a phenomenon for a shamisen recording. Their first U=
.S.
album is available on Domo Records and features pieces culled from their
overall repertoire.

Akira Satake first discovered the banjo listening to his older brother's
Flatt and Scruggs recordings in his native Osaka, Japan. After relocatin=
g
to New York City, he spent two decades honing his innovative banjo style =
in
venues from Village clubs to Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. His
collection of original compositions -- Cooler Heads Prevail -- won the 1=
998
German Music Critics Award for Best World Music Recording and led to a st=
int
as an award-winning music producer.
American banjo virtuoso Tony Trischka calls Akira Satake "a brilliant
banjoist with a split-level passion for the fiery breakdowns of southern
Appalachia and the kaleidoscopic rhythms and melodies of world music." H=
e
currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina.

This program is made possible in part with support from the New York Stat=
e
Council on the Arts, a State agency. Additional support is provided by t=
he
Concordia Foundation.
