Hi John

Isn't one of the fundamentals of Zen practice not to have a goal?

If one acheives an enlightened state, then one can decide what to do =
with it according to the situation one finds oneself in. To have a goal =
or intention of saving others before one has acheived enlighenment is =
putting the cart before the horse.

Just blow, and see where it takes you.

Stan

  Hi.

Shakuhachi is associated with Zen Buddhism which is a
branch of Mahayana Buddhism. Mahayana is
distinguished from some other major branches by its
attempt to save all sentient beings. A Mahayana
practitioner does not seek his/her individual
salvation (enlightenment). S/he vows to postpone her
enlightenment until all sentient beings have attained
Buddhahood. This is expressed through the Bodhichitta
vow which is worded differently from one group to the
next. Bodhi means enlightenment and Chitta means
mind. So the Mind of Enlightenment (Bodhichitta)
means the intention to benefit all sentient beings by
  your practice.

This sets a very high standard for blowing bamboo. I=20
am not very successful. But it is a goal.

This is a complicated matter and I have tried to give
  a brief explanation.

  Regards,

  John Baker
