On pitch recognition, I just did an evening course called Golden Ears
Training, led by a fantastic sound master, David Moulton. In one excercise he
played examples of what sounded like white noise, strung out along a ten octave
grid. After we had digested the frequencies, he played octaves at random,
asking us to identify them. I have had almost no Western musical training, but
still, I was surprised to find that I did pretty well. I had just never given
that kind of attention to sound. I've had fun, in the days since, guessing
the frequencies of cars, planes, heating systems, voices and music. David has
created a CD set for this Golden Ears Training. Here's the contact info.
