[Shaku] Hawai'i Shakuhachi Camp

Greetings and Happy New Year.

This is a belated update for the Hawai'i Shakuhachi Camp. The Camp will
be held on 18-21 March at the Music Department in the beautiful campus
of the University of Hawai'i. The Music Department is sponsoring of the
Camp.

A link to the registration forms and an overview of the camp schedule
can be found at www.rileylee.net.

The curriculum has yet to be finalised. This means that participants
can still request specific pieces that they want to learn, if they
contact us asap.

We intend to teach a number of honkyoku from the Chikuho, Kinko and
Watatsumi/Yokoyama lineages. In addition, there will be several
sessions on min'yo (Japanese folk songs), which will cover both
techniques and specific pieces, and classical sankyoku (ensemble
pieces).

We will make use of the koto players who will be there (at least two,
possibly more) to teach koto/shakuhachi ensemble pieces, in particular
a number of classics by Miyagi (he composed Spring Sea). These pieces
are fairly easy but very musical; eg. Izumi (The Spring), Kotori no
Uta (Small Bird), etc.

Finally, a number of modern pieces will be taught - solos, duets and
trios, and ensemble pieces with koto.

There will be a special class for the Japanese festival flute (shi no
bue or yokobue). Instruments will be provided to borrow or buy.

A variety of notation will be used (Chikuho, Kinko, Tozan, staff
notation), but Kinko and staff notation will predominate.

The camp will cater to absolute beginners, beginners, and people who
think they are still beginners but really aren't. There will be classes
on techniques, performance practice, etc.

There will also be special classes for those who are themselves
teachers and/or perform on a professional basis. This will, for
example, be a great chance to begin one's practice towards successful
auditions for future events such as the World Shakuhachi Festival in
2008.

The public performance and the student concert will be held in the 400+
seat Orvis Auditorium at the UH Music Dept. All of the workshops will be
in the Music Department, who are co-sponsoring the event. Also, all
participants will receive at least one private lesson. We expect around
30 participants, including 10 from Japan.

In short, the camp will be enjoyable and edifying to all shakuhachi
players however little or much experience they have. Places are limited
- we have room for about ten more participants - so book as soon as
possible.

If you have any specific questions, please email me.

Best regards, Riley

PS Most of the participants who have already signed up are staying on
one or more days. Like the Shakuhachi Camp, the surf in Hawai'i caters
to all levels of experience.....
