Hello,

My name is David an dI have had a few years of loose experience with
the shakuhachi in the past. Mainly I found that out of my friends only
I was able to create a sound.
Recently, a friend visited me and brought me the same shakuhachi- I
had requested it and began playing as before. I am trying to focus on
creating a clear note rather than finger the holes.
I am reading The Japanese Shakuhachi Flute, A Guide To The Traditional
Music & Notation by Monty H. Levenson. It is very good if you want to
learn the history of the shakuhachi, but to really learn how to play I
find that breathing excercises are best.
I find that playing outside demands more tension and concentration. I
noticed that I am quicker to become short of breath, but feel that
very fine feeling of tingling hands and mouth while playing outside.
I am very interested in Suizen and began reading an old thread from this list.

time to be known,
David
