Hello --

Yes, it is important that the fingers be relaxed on the holes -- many
people tense up the hands when faced with difficulty. No need to grip
the shakuhachi. Also, it is important, I think, not to try to "work
through" the pain when it comes up. Instead, stop and do some hand
exercises before returning to playing. See
