In the absence of a strong moderator, email lists traditionally rely on
community self-policing. Quoting to the list an off-topic or offensive
posting without naming the person, and tactfully pointing out that the post
is off-topic, offensive, or harsh helps define the content of the total
traffic and is an object lesson for newbies and spur-of-the-moment rule
breaking.
