Bruce,

Looks like the Fender Acoustronic would be what you're looking for in
an amp. Your other alternative is to get a small personal PA. Have you
considered that? What size rooms do you anticipate playing in? I've
been using a tiny bass amp for some gigs and I don't even use reverb
because the rooms are already wet. You don't really need a guitar amp
unless you are planning to also play guitar. Here is a page with some
remarkably inexpensive small PA's that might work for shakuhachi.
http://www.wwbw.com/Live-Sound-d1.music I don't have any experience
with them but you can probably find customer reviews on the web.

Shakuhachi doesn't crank out a lot of percussive transients like
guitar, bass or keyboards so you probably need less power in reserve
than you would for those instruments. Another factor you will want to
consider is whether the unit has phantom power or not. Phantom will
drive a condenser mic. If it doesn't have phantom power you are
restricted to using a dynamic mic, which means you must position your
shakuhachi close to the microphone at all times or you lose a lot of
sound. Sometimes wind ricochets off the mic and cuts off your air flow.
If you get something with phantom power you can work the condenser mic
like a vocalist. You have control over your dynamics with your
proximity to the mic as well as how strong you are blowing. I doubt
those guitar amp/vocal combos have phantom power, but some small PA's
would.

Another option is to get a small board like a Mackie which have great
sound and EQ, phantom power and are very portable. Then you can feed
that into any amp you want to. You can get a small power amp and a
speaker and you should be fine. With this you will need to get outboard
reverb, but you can find something pretty cheap.

Regards,

BR
