I recently had an opportunity to blow a Korean taegum. It is quite different
to the Shakuhachi as the Western flute is different.
It is also made from bamboo.
What was interesting was the insert of a membrane, made from a particular
leaf. This is located about halfway from the blow hole and the first finger
hole. It is an elongated oval shape. This hole, at least 2-3 times the size
of a finger hole is covered with
this membrane that looks much like the tissue paper we put over the wings of
model airplane wings. It adds a 'kazoo' effect to the sound.

Thought this might be an interesting experiment one day to add to one of my
own home made Shakuhachi's, when I get to try this I will let you know how
it works out.

Kel.
