Date: Tue Jul 12 2005 - 15:05:02 PDT

Hello everyone,

This is a note advertising this November's "Shakuhachi Roots"=20
pilgrimage with the Shakuhachi=A0Society of BC.

This year will have a special focus on the connection between Zen and=20
Shakuahchi in today's Japan. We will be traveling all the way from from=20=

Fukuoka in the south of Japan up to Tokyo.=A0In addition to harvesting=20=

bamboo again with Atsuya Okuda and the Zen Sa Bo, we are planning to=20
visit and practice at Hakata Iccho Ken (temple of Watazumi-doso) in=20
Fukuoka; visiting shakuhachi playing Buddhist monk, Yano Shiku, the=20
abbot the of Kokushou temple in Aichi, as well as Higashi Myogi,=20
student of Watazumi-doso and the abbot of Tengenji Temple in Tokyo; and=20=

pay a visit to Katsuya Yokoyama Sensei. Of course we will spend time in=20=

Kyoto to visit Kurahashi Yoshio and Meian-ji.

November is one of the best times to go to Japan as the plane fares are=20=

quite low and the weather is excellent, not to mention the spectacular=20=

color displays of autumn leaves' colours. And of course the bamboo is=20
ready for harvesting!
=A0
Other side activities will or may include:

--visiting the famous pottery town, Hagi-shi in Yamaguchi Prefecture
--visiting Miyajima Island in Hiroshima, site of the famous Great Tori=20=

Gate
--visiting ancient reliquaries in Nara, the ancient capital of Japan
--visiting the oldest Shinto Shrines in Japan (Ise and Tsubaki) and=20
partaking in misogi (water purification)
--partaking in the Chichibu Night Festival
=A0
Please keep in mind that this schedule is relatively flexible. If you=20
want to alter it in any way to your needs please feel free.=20
Otherwise=A0it is encouraged that everyone stick together for group=20
solidarity and support, especially for those first-time visitors to=20
Japan. Maximum number of participants for this trip is 8 so please=20
reserve your space soon!

Please confirm if you will be joining the trip and if you have=20
any=A0other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Please reply to ramos@bamboo-in.com.

Sincerely yours,

=A0Alcvin

"Shakuhachi Roots" Pilgrimage to Japan (Nov. 17-Dec. 5 2005)

Estimated cost for one person in CA$ will be close to US$4500.00 So=20
budgeting for about $5000 for the trip is a safe bet.

Purpose:

The aim in this trip is to give all shakuhachi students and friends the=20=

opportunity to=A0connect back to the roots of the shakuhachi flute.=20
Learning shakuhachi is not just a mechanical learning of notes on a=20
page, but a whole cultural experience which entails physically and=20
spiritually feeling the country of the shakuhachi's origin, Japan.=20
Non-shakuhachi players are also welcome to join as it will be a very=20
unique journey into traditional Japan.
