Stephanie,
I am using Walnut oil on flutes I am making myself, there is no other
coating. I dip a small piece of cloth in the oil then push that through the
core, I then wipe it over the outside. The bamboo soaks up the oil and I
wipe off any excess and buff it. I do not notice any rancid odor, in fact
there is no odor at all.
It has no effect on the tone.
I do it to assist in preventing moisture uptake into the bamboo and it also
enhances the appearance of the wood.
