i do not have time to go into too much detail on this as i am about to start preparing 15 different dishes....
but to use your shakespeare analogy. Sure it has changed!! Look at the film versions for example. Orson Welles treatment of Macbeth is probably quite different from what Shakespeare imagined. Kurosawa's Japanese version of Macbeth (cant recall the title of this amazing film) is even more different. Greenaways' treatment of Shakespeare in film is again totally different.
Takemitsu is someone i admire very much but this particular comment really does not make sense to me. He is putting Tsuruta Kinshi in modern contexts in his film and orchestral scores and then does not want her sound to change as a result. hmmmm seems impossible to me for a musician of the amazing caliber of Kinshi to not change from such a radical departure from the context of traditional biwa playing.
