I think traditions need funding more than gatekeepers. If traditional
performers were respected and paid a living wage, there would be no
need for referees of what's traditional and what isn't. The work of Arn
Chorn-Pond in raising money to pay a monthly stipend to the remaining
Cambodian traditional musicians, those who narrowly escaped death at
the hands of the Khmer Rouge, is a lot more valuable than that of
outsiders who try to decide what is or isn't traditional enough. Take
care of the economics and the academic issues will take care of
themselves; ignore the economics and we'll be more and more awash in
mushy commercialism while both traditional AND innovative musics become
increasingly ghettoized in academia.
