Hello shakuhachi people,

I'd also recommend the annual weekend shakuhachi
workshop near the end of March in Bisei town, Okayama
prefecture; I think it is from the 24th-26th this year
(and just a hop, skip and a shinkansen ride from
Kansai) with the International Shakuhachi Kenshukan:
usually with Furuya, Kakizakai, and Matama or
Ishikawa senseis under the direction of Yokoyama
Katsuya. It costs about 45,000 yen for the two and a
half day workshop including meals and lodging; this
year I believe that advanced students will be learning
the dokyoku pieces San'an and Koden Sugomori and
beginners will learn Sanya and Tamuke, probably in
addition to several shinkyoku pieces. It's not that
far from Kansai; an hr and a half from Osaka by
Shinkansen, change to a local for a ten minute ride to
Shin-Kurashiki? and then usually they meet you in a
van or bus to take you up an hour's ride or so to
Bisei, which was the site of the first international
shakuhachi festival, four years before the famed
festival at the University of Colorado. There are
usually about 25 -35 participants in the spring
(probably including one or two foreigners); it's a
good learning experience (all in Japanese ). The
number for the Kenshukan can probably be found on a
link from the ISS or a link from Mejiro. Happy
Blowing,
