If you go to Monty Levenson's site "shakuhachi.com" &
click on Tai Hei Shakuhachi Catalog then on Bamboo
Used in Shakuhachi, you will find that Madake is
indeed used for shakuhachi. You will also find that
Madake is "a giant timber bamboo." I think it is
clear that timber bamboo is not uniformly used for
shakuhachi.
