Hello Mr. Shadduck,

I'm very interested in your question.

I was classically trained on the b-flat clarinet, alto saxophone, and the
contrabass (upright bass), but now I primarily play Native American flutes
which range
from Plains Indian Flutes, Miwok (California Indian) flutes, to vertical
end blown flutes from South America, bone flutes, Chinese end blown flutes
(Xiao), Nepalese transverse flutes,
and the Japanese Shakuhachi. I grew up listening to a lot of jazz in
Detroit. I was a vocational music major at Cass Tech High School. Geri
Allen was there at the
same time but I didn't really know her. She was a great pianist even in
high school.

John Coltrane is my favorite jazz instrumentalist. I've seen a few
photographs of him over the years but I've never seen him holding a
shakuhachi. I can imagine Rahsaan
Roland Kirk playing a shakuhachi, since he played just about everything
else, but I've never heard if that was ever the case...

I hope you find out more about this image!

Sincerely,

Shelton

As a newcomer to the world of shakuhachi I have many questions to ask, but
I'd like to start with one relating to John Coltrane. My primary
instrument is saxophone and I was surprised to see one of my jazz heroes
in a photo holding a shakuhachi (scroll down in the link to see the
 image):

I have seen discussions of this photo before but with no no conclusive
answers. Does anyone know the story behind the picture, or when and where
it was taken? I contacted the John Coltrane Foundation for information but
did not receive a response. Perhaps a Coltrane biography mentions his
 relationship with the shakuhachi?

 Thank you for the help,
