I just wanted to remind everyone that July looks to be pretty eventful re. shakuhachi in the SF bay area.

First Kaoru Kakizakai sensei will be visiting from June 30th through July 4th. Lesson slots are filling up but if you're interested in a lesson contact me soon at this email address. He will be playing 2 concerts at Phil's place on July 2nd and 3rd; I'm not sure if there are any tickets left but to find out you can contact Phil at phil@philipgelb.com.

Next Michael Chikuzen Gould sensei will be visiting on July 23rd through July 25th. He will be available for lessons on July 24th and 25th; if you are interested contact me at this email address. He will also be giving a concert on the evening of July 23rd at the Old First Church in San Francisco, a great concert venue.

Thanks much to Cornelius Boots for setting up the concert; here is Cornelius's blurb for it:

Solo Acoustic Wizards: Ancient and Modern---Michael Chikuzen Gould (shakuhachi) and Mark Deutsch (Bazantar) at the Old First Church <http://www.oldfirstconcerts.org/> in SF
8 pm ---tickets available soon, about $15, all ages, excellent acoustic space

Zeroth Law and Old First Concerts present two solo sets in one evening: one by a modern grandmaster of a 1000+ old bamboo instrument from a Japanese/Zen Buddhist tradition; one by a modern inventor, master of tuning systems and bass virtuoso on a complex yet beautiful instrument of his own design and construction: the Bazantar (an upright bass with dozens of sympathetic strings, kind of like a sitar).
This is music that is rarely available live, and an unprecedented combined event of two very different solo presentations: each complete unto itself, each musical and mystical at the same time (i.e. the brain cannot quite figure out how the sounds are being made, but knows it to be music), and spanning 1000 years of musical evolution.
Save the Date! (Chikuzen is my shakuhachi teacher of 9 years; Mark is in Sabbaticus Rex and opened for Edmund Welles last January)
