Wow...and I would imagine that in and around New York shakuhachi "happenings" are fairly common. How the times have changed. In 1969 no one had ever heard the word shakuhachi and today with acculturation the shakuhachi gene pool is not only been preserved but has taken on these interesting combinations in the survival of the shakuhachi. How wonderful.

"A Page of Madness" is a silent movie in Japan in 1926 by Teinosuke
Kinugasa, which attracts attention in a very unique technique.
This time, Aki Nakamura (shakuhachi) and Gene Coleman (bass clarinet)
composed new music for this film and will accompany it, with koto, viola,
cello, and contrabass.

"Breathing Zen: Missoku Breathing & Shakuhachi Master Class"

http://www.japansociety.org/content.cfm/event_detail?eid=1b013b4b

"Missoku" is the Japanese traditional way of breathing.
It is not only useful for shakuhachi, but also helpful for all the people
who would like to understand Japanese culture.
And, Aki Nakamura will teach "Hon-shirabe" in the master class.
