Hi Karl,

Great! How can I get a copy of that CD? I'd like to hear it!

I can't find any sort of disc/album with Coltrane playing the shakuhachi...

Thanks,

Shelton

Hi Shelton,

Yes, I've seen that photo. Coltrane was one of my heros growing up and I
was really intrigued by that photo when I saw it. I was a jazz sax
player for years before taking up the shakuhachi but didn't originally
think about it as a jazz instrument. But I slowly started trying to play
with some of my old jazz cronies and at some point realized that the
shakuhachi had some potential to bring something new to jazz. So a few
years ago I started working pretty hard on developing an approach to
jazz shakuhachi and the CD is the current result of that work (it helped
that I had some killer musicians supporting me on the CD).

I'm happy to answer any other questions you have, e.g. if you're
thinking about playing jazz on the shakuhachi I can tell you a few of
things I worked on for what it's worth.

Cheers,

Karl
