A unique opportunity to spend an interactive evening with world renowned
Shakuhachi artist and scholar - Dr. Riley Lee.

Tuesday April 24th at 7:30PM at the Stanford University Center for
Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).

                                              Just the Sound of Bamboo?

The shakuhachi is a paradox. A piece of bamboo with five finger holes,
it is one of the simplest of all musical instruments. Yet in the hands
of a master, the shakuhachi is one of the most expressive, rivaled
perhaps only by the human voice. Riley Lee, one such master, will
discuss and demonstrate this paradox in this talk and musical performance.

 From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riley_Lee

Riley Kelly Lee is an American-born, Australian-based, shakuhachi player
and teacher. In 1980 he became the first non-Japanese person to attain
the rank of Dai Shihan (grand master) in the shakuhachi tradition.

He has published scholarly articles and book reviews in leading national
and international musicology journals, such as Ethnomusicology and Asian
Music.

Dr. Lee has taught at Princeton University as a visiting Fellow and has
made more than fifty commercially released recordings.

Admission is free thanks to support from CCRMA and Aerobie, Inc - Palo Alto.
