Fetch: Transferring MS Word Files from a Mac to a Unix Machine

The steps in this process are:

  1. Open MS Word on the Mac
  2. Create and/or Save your file in the appropriate format
  3. Upload the file from your Mac to weber or issci1/sdcc4

MS Word and File Formats

Files created with MS Word are not appropriate for transfer to Unix machines. These files need two changes:
  1. The lines in the file need to be adjusted for length so they fit in the Unix 80-character limit.
  2. The file needs to be converted from "Normal" Word format to "Text only with Line Breaks."

Adjusting the line length
Open the Word file you wish to transfer. Go to the "Format" menu and the "Document" option and change the right margin to 2 inches.

This will reduce the line length to something under 80 characters.

Making a Plain Text File
Now go to the File menu and the "Save As" option.

Select "Text only with line breaks" in the File format menu and give the file a Unix-legit filename. Close the file.

Using Fetch

  1. Find and lauch "Fetch" on your local machine.
  2. When the dialog box appears, enter the requisite information
(use your own login in place of za12 in the "User ID" box):

  3. Find the file you created with MS Word and "Put" it.
  4. Close the connection and quit Fetch
  5. The file is now in your account on the remote, Unix machine.
