Transferring Files from a Unix Computer to a Mac using Kermit

Scenerio: You have a file in your Unix account that you need to download (transfer) to your local computer, and you are not running one of the SLIP/PPP applications like Telnet or Fetch.

You are using something like Kermit, Z-Term, Microphone, etc.

You know the filename of the file you wish to transfer.

1. If you are running Kermit, skip to step 2.

Otherwise, somewhere in the menu bar is a link to a dialog box that allows you to define file transfer protocols or modes. Find that dialog box and select "kermit" file transfer protocol.

2. At the % prompt, type "kermit" (no quotes).

3. The Kermit prompt is "C-Kermit>" (no quotes)

4. At the C-Kermit prompt, type "send filename" (no quotes)

5. Grab your mouse, pull down the File menu, and select "Receive" or "Receive File"

6. When the "C-Kermit>" prompt returns, type "exit" (no quotes).

Your file is now on your hard drive, with the same name as it had on the Unix machine.

To open the transferred file with Word

If you double-click the file icon for your transferred file on the Mac, you will get the message: "The application that created this document cannot be found." Instead, drag the icon for the file until it is over the Word icon. When the Word icon changes color (darkens), release the mouse button and the document will be opened with Word. If this doesn't work, open Word as though you were about to create a new document and then, with the File menu or the cloverleaf-o combination, open your transferred document.
