Wondering about the original Usenet / ARPAnet Gateways

Hello. I am currently working on a term paper for school
about the forces behind the development of Usenet News and "the
Net." I would like to understand what the original connection
(c1980/81?) was between the then new Usenet News and the more
established ARPAnet.

My question consists of the following:

1) What did the inital gateway consist of? Was it a
bidirectional flow of information or unidirection flow over this
connection?

2) Exactly what was the connection between ARPAnet and
Usenet? (Were ARPAnet mailing lists gatewayed to Usenet
newsgroups?)

3) What was involved in arranging for / setting the
connection/gateway up?

4) And lastly what were the hardships (if any) in arranging
for the gatewaying, and were there any surprises along the way?

I am interested in understaning the relationship between the fa
newsgroups and the human-net and sf-lovers lists/groups.

It would be nice to see more activity on this list, so I would
appreciate any anwers being sent to the list and CCed to me.

Thanks!

PS: The following is a VERY brief summary of what my paper will
be about:

"The Largest Machine":
Where it came from and its importance to Society

I propose to write a paper concerning the developement of
"The Net." I am interested in exploring the forces behind its
development and the fundemental change it represents over
previous communications media. I will consult with people who
have been involved with the Usenet News from its beginnings, and
the various networks that comprise the Computer Network around
the world. I wish to come to some understanding of where the Net
has come from, so as to be helpful in figuring out where it is
going to.
