My opinion is that the early pioneers facilitated the growth of
Usenet, and without their effort, we may not be where we are today.
Like Steve said, the Arpanet gateways and mailing lists were
certainly contributing factors. I'm saying that the gateways
wouldn't have been there if key people didn't labor to put them in
place, and to stick out their necks and fight to keep them going.
The "assumption" was actually meant for Michael, the assumption
being that since the mailing list is usenet.hist@weber.ucsd.edu,
you probably know about the archive there already.
Robert, I'm wasn't looking for more kudo's. My comment was the
standard clarification of Usenet vs. Arpanet (vs. UUCP, vs. ...),
and the distinctions that were somewhat unclear then are even
less clear today. Actually, I'm sorry that you didn't have a better
introduction a few months ago to the resources of the network at
large. Most of the pioneers burned out long ago and prefer to keep
very low profiles. Please continue to post; your messages provide
input about current perceptions, and we need them to balance
perceptions colored by early days.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
