This could be a fun topic ...
My favorite(s) of late are:
*Shingetsu*
Tadashi Tajima
(Music of the World #CDT-124)
Eight honkyoku works, many played on a LONG flute (up to 3.0 shaku).
The thing I like best about this CD is that Tajima plays without
a lot of fancy techniques, so it makes it possible to learn from
his playing.
and
*Shakuhachi: The Japanese Flute*
Kohachiro Miyata
(Elektra Nonesuch #972076-2)
Five honkyoku works. Like Tajima, Miyata plays with a profound
simplicity and few embelishments beyond what I understand to be
standard Kinko style techniques.
I've found both of these CDs to be examples of good playing, both
are recommended by my teachers, and I've heard more than I can use,
with my limited skills, in both of them.
What else are people listening to out there?
