Hi everyone,
When practicing yesterday I stumbled upon an exercise(?!) that
dramatically opened up my sound. Thought you might find it useful.
When practicing long tones slowly:
1. move head/chin up(kari) and down(mari): raising pitch up 1/2 step and
down 1 step.
2. move flute/chin sideways: raising the pitch 1/2 step up in both
directions.
3. move flute/chin in a circular motion clockwise and counterclockwise:
start both up (raising pitch) and down.
Ideally you should be able to go through a number of repetitions on each
breath. The challenge is keeping the sound even and the note bending
smooth. On all exercises the flute must be moved slightly to accentuate
the head motion.
Hope this helps,
Adam
