Hello Everyone.
Several months ago, a discussion developed about using dampits when storing
shakuhachi. I would like to get some suggestions about my tempermental rokusun. The
piece was made a year ago by Seika in Kyoto and developed a shallow crack on the back of
the mouthpiece. The maker was very considerate to repair it for me and bound the flute,
but did not glue the crack. To prevent further damage, the maker suggested I keep
shakuhachi in 50-60% humidity and I've been using a box with water wells similar to
Ronnie Seldin's description. Here's the problem: because of the low winter humidity,
the crack widens slightly after brief (@1 hour) exposure to the normal air. I'm fearful
this humidity roller coaster is just as detrimental as is low humidity. I'd welcome any
advice/experience on this matter. Many thanks.
....and I wish you all a festive holiday season!
