Kinko style shakuhachi master Christopher Yohmei Blasdel will visit
Seattle and give an afternoon-evening shakuhachi workshop, open to all
levels of players.
Christopher Yohmei, one of the organizers of the World Shakuhachi
Festival '98 in Boulder, Colorado, has resided in Japan and studied with
the recently deceased grand master Goro Yamaguchi since 1972, making him
one of Yamaguchi's oldest students and the first foreigner to receive a
name and teaching license from Yamaguchi.
For this workshop, Christopher Yohmei will emphasize the gentle yet
powerful playing style that characterized Yamaguchi's performances.
Material for the workshop will include the elegant and melodic Kinko
honkyoku solo works and the gaikyoku ensemble songs for shakuhachi,
shamisen and koto ("Rokudan," "Chidori no Kyoku," etc.). Material for
beginners will include exercises and the simple folk/children's songs
taken from his book, THE SHAKUHACHI, A MANUAL FOR LEARNING (Copies of
the workshop pieces will be made available in the lesson. The book and
accompanying tape are available from Monty Levenson's web site,
www.shakuhachi.com).
Christopher Yohmei has a long and distinguished career as
teacher, recording artist, performer and researcher into Japanese music.
He received his MFA from
Tokyo University of Music and the Fine Arts in 1982 and presently
performs and teaches frequently in Japan and around the world. He will
be stopping in Seattle this summer on his way to participate in the
Aspen Seminar. Also while in Seattle he will be performing with Port
Townsend poet Sam Hamill on Thursday, July 22, at the Richard Hugo House
(Coffee House), 7:00 PM to commemorate the release of their new CD of
shakuhachi and poetry, HEART OF BAMBOO.
